The program opens with Mascagni’s lyrical Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana, drawn from the opera that launched him to international fame in 1890. Pianist Clayton Stephenson returns to Lexington Symphony with a passionate, intensely expressive performance of Brahms’s dramatic Second Piano Concerto. The evening concludes with Schumann’s exuberant Rhenish Symphony, a spirited tribute to the Rhine River and its surrounding landscapes.
