Angie Zhang

Dr. Angie Zhang has established herself as one of her generation’s most in-demand artists and pedagogues on modern piano, fortepiano, and as a period instrument specialist. Grand Prize Winner of both the Music Academy of the West’s Innovation Institute Award and Yamaha Young Performing Artists Competition, she is the first and only American to be awarded a top prize at the Chopin International Piano Competition on Period Instruments in Warsaw. Dr. Zhang is also a three-time winner of the Juilliard Concerto Competition and unanimous winner of the Aspen Music Festival and School’s Mozart Concerto Competition.

With over 45 appearances with orchestras around the world under conductors such as Fabio Luisi, JoAnn Falletta, and Jeffrey Kahane, she has also made her debut as both pianist/conductor at Alice Tully Hall (Lincoln Center NYC). She has been professionally contracted for solo recitals since age eight, and concertos since her debut at age ten under GRAMMY-nominated conductor Niel DePonte, and is also a seasoned chamber musician, appearing with artists such as Itzhak Perlman, Zlatomir Fung, and the Dover, Aeolus, and St. Lawrence String Quartets. Notable appearances include La Jolla Music Society, Bravo! Vail Festival, Music@Menlo, Perlman Music Program, Sarasota and Taos Festivals, Kennedy Center, Harvard and Metropolitan Clubs, LACMA, Aspen Art Museum. She has studied extensively with Yoheved Kaplinsky, Joseph Kalichstein, Robert Levin, Robert McDonald, Emanuel Ax, and Malcolm Bilson and had additional masterclasses with Leon Fleisher, Stephen Hough, Richard Goode, and many more. She has taught collegiately for nine years including at Juilliard, University of Michigan, Concordia University; gives frequent masterclasses; and is Founder and Director of MusicFitness Labs and the ModernPlus Festival showcasing both historical and modern instruments.

Dr. Zhang holds BM and MM degrees with Academic and Chamber Honors from The Juilliard School as a Kovner Fellow and received the Peter Mennin Award for Outstanding Achievement and Leadership in Music upon graduation. She holds a DMA in Piano Performance and MM in Fortepiano Performance from University of Michigan, where she received the Earl V. Moore Award upon graduation.
