About
The First United Methodist Church at the Chicago Temple is a 568-foot neo-Gothic skyscraper completed in 1924, making it the tallest church building in the world. Designed by Holabird & Roche, it combines religious and commercial functions, with a 1,000-seat sanctuary on the lower levels and office spaces above, mostly leased to legal professionals. At its peak sits the Sky Chapel—400 feet above ground and considered the highest place of worship in the world—dedicated in 1952 as a gift from the Walgreen family. The building reflects a unique integration of spiritual life within Chicago's urban core.
